The White House confirmed the initiation of federal worker terminations on Friday, making good on earlier warnings in response to the continuing federal funding lapse, which is now poised to extend into its third straight week.

Official Announcement and Early Information

The director of the White House budget office posted on a public platform that “RIFs have begun,” referring to the government’s procedure for letting employees go.

Although the official provided no details on which departments were affected, a treasury spokesperson stated that notices had been distributed within that agency. Furthermore, a DHS spokesperson indicated that layoffs would take place at the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. Also, a union representing federal workers confirmed that employees at the Department of Education would be affected by the reduction in force.

Union Response and Legal Challenges

Labor representatives cautions that the layoffs would have “devastating effects” on services relied upon by the public and vowed to contest the moves in the legal system.

This is shameful that the administration has used the funding lapse as an excuse to illegally fire thousands of workers who deliver critical services to communities nationwide,” stated a national union president, who leads the AFGE.

The largest labor federation in the US reacted to the news, saying, “Labor organizations will see you in court.”

Legislative Impasse and Funding Battle

Congressional Democrats have declined to support a GOP-supported legislation to reopen the government unless it includes healthcare-centered concessions. After repeated failed attempts, the Senate’s Republican leaders have adjourned the Senate until next Tuesday, meaning the standoff is unlikely to be ended before then.

At a media briefing, the GOP leader in the House, the speaker, criticized Senate Democrats for not supporting the Republican bill, which passed in the lower chamber on a largely partisan basis.

“This is the last paycheck that government employees will see until Washington Democrats decide to fulfill their duties and reopen the government,” Johnson said. Beginning shortly, American service members, many of whom live on tight budgets, are going to miss a full paycheck.”

Legal and Operational Constraints

Last week, labor groups filed for a temporary restraining order to prevent the government from implementing any reductions in force during the funding gap. Additionally, a federal judge directed the government to disclose details on termination strategies, affected agencies, and if any federal employees had been brought back to carry out layoffs.

A report contended that a government shutdown limits the ability of the administration to carry out firings, citing official advice that admitted any long-term staff cuts need to have been started prior to the shutdown began.

Impact on Workers

The layoffs took place on the same day that federal workers got only a incomplete payment covering the end of September but excluding the beginning of the current month, since funding lapsed at the start of the period.

Max Stier, the president of the advocacy group, criticized the political stalemate’s impact on government workers.
