It has been 30 years since the first Toy Story movie was released, launching Pixar as a leading film company and introducing audiences to beloved characters like Woody (Tom Hanks) and Buzz Lightyear (the voice talent), who are now household names.

Coming in 2026, the fifth installment is scheduled for release. The initial preview for Toy Story 5 appeared this week, providing a glimpse into the storyline but leaving viewers wondering how it will address the ending of Toy Story 4.

Bonnie's New Toy: A Digital Device Spooks the Toys

The preview reveals the young girl — who inherited Andy's toys when he left for college — receiving a brand new plaything, one that terrifies the familiar toy group. She acquires her first tablet computer, and she is excited about it.

Theoretically, the amphibian-inspired device will animate just like Bonnie's other toys. However, the characters appear to consider it as a threat coming to replace them, which it likely will.

Woody's Return: Mysteries from Toy Story 4

An element the teaser doesn't touch on is what the sheriff is back with his friends in the child's bedroom. The end of Toy Story 4 depicted him embark on a fresh journey with the shepherdess (Annie Potts), journeying with a fair and assisting prize toys find good homes.

Certainly, Pixar will explain the aftermath of Toy Story 4 in the film. Seeing him appear in the familiar setting without warning is somewhat puzzling, though. It also raises questions whether his partner will have come back with Woody. And what about Duke Caboom (Keanu Reeves)?

Continuity from the Previous Film

At the very least, some aspects are continuing from the prior film. The last thing the cowboy did before setting off for his new life was pass his symbol of authority to the cowgirl (the voice actor), leaving her as the leader of the toy domain. The clip displays the insignia attached to her shirt.

It is hoped she is remains the key figure among the toys.
