This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.
Consider this a dare for partners in committed relationships who enjoy the horror genre: Settle in with your partner and stream Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut on the Hulu service. On the surface, it might appear like standard physical horror, but beneath Together lies a profound contemplation about how we choose to love our partners.
An Introductory Film Investigating Partnership Complexities
Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a special spark to their portrayals, expertly portraying both the strengths and weaknesses of a enduring union.
The story starts when Tim and Millie move from the urban environment to the countryside for Millie’s job. A commonly used plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the cliches end. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.
A Supernatural Catalyst
While walking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim tumble into an hole in the earth. After being trapped overnight there and managing to escape, a mysterious influence takes hold of the couple. This force induces a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.
The entire film is a slow burn fright fest, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, disturbing (but never too gross) body horror, and authentically humorous interactions (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks orchestrates these parts expertly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.
Layered Performances
A large part of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to pursue anything but his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.
Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his support system. He dreads the notion of utterly sacrificing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is intensified by the reality he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes either of his characters the clear bad guy.
Tim and Millie grapple with the kind of problems that arise in any relationship a decade in. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.
Thematic Depth
While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism never feels hamfisted or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.
A Controversial Conclusion
Together’s conclusion, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that unattached audience members have interpreted the film as a strong argument for staying single. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them resolve their issues.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your significant other and state, “I’d do that for you”?
Whatever the case may be, Together is an test you can undertake at this very moment.
Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform as of this moment.
