Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was convicted of plotting a government overthrow in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after recent developments were revealed.

This involved seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the custody, the magistrate said data from the unit overseeing his home detention suggested the ex-president's "intention to break the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his child.

His son, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a meeting of his backers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.

They also asked that he be permitted to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he needed ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other ailments.

Background on Conviction

Bolsonaro was convicted of leading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his political opponent, Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a scheme which involved plans to murder Lula and his vice-presidential running mate, Geraldo Alckmin, and to imprison and murder the presiding judge - the top judicial official who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The conspiracy was stopped because it didn't receive the endorsement of the armed forces officials. His successor was sworn in without issue on January 1st, 2023.

But a week later, on the eighth of January, numerous his backers attacked and damaged official structures in the national capital, Brazil's capital.
